Omar looks over at Gurey as he gathers his things to go for a walk outside. Omar is almost always with his father when he is not at home. Sometimes he gets to see old friends from the private school he used to attend and will go over to their houses to watch basketball or play games. Omar says he hangs out with them maybe once a month. “I still see them around.”
Gurey is protective of Omar partially due to the drug and gang activity he has witnessed in other East African immigrant children living in the area, which he does not want for his son. Online schooling means that Omar is less exposed to these influences.
